Side-by-side comparison for buyers exporting from China to Africa and CIS markets
The Volkswagen Tacqua and the standard Volkswagen T-Cross are often confused because they share the same platform. However, there is one critical difference that makes a huge impact for export buyers: the Tacqua has a significantly longer wheelbase.
The Chinese-market Tacqua uses a long-wheelbase version (2651mm), while the global T-Cross has a shorter wheelbase. This seemingly small difference creates meaningful advantages in interior space, comfort, and practicality — especially important for buyers in Africa and CIS countries who often need vehicles that can comfortably carry families or serve commercial purposes.
In this article, we compare the two models in detail from an export buyer’s perspective, including space, performance, price, and real-world suitability for African and CIS roads.
| Specification | Volkswagen Tacqua (China) | Volkswagen T-Cross (Global) |
|---|---|---|
| Wheelbase | 2651 mm | 2563 mm |
| Length | 4194 mm | 4107–4218 mm |
| Rear Legroom | Significantly more | Standard |
| Boot Space (seats up) | 455 L | ~385–455 L |
| Max Boot Space | 1281 L (sliding seats) | ~1125–1281 L |
| Ground Clearance | ≈ 179 mm | ≈ 155–175 mm |
| Engine Options | 1.2T / 1.5L / 1.4T | 1.0T / 1.5T (varies by market) |
The most noticeable difference is interior space. Because the Tacqua has an 88mm longer wheelbase than the standard global T-Cross, rear passengers enjoy significantly more legroom. This is a major advantage in markets where vehicles are often used to transport multiple family members or used for ride-hailing services.
Another practical feature unique to the Tacqua is the sliding rear seats. This allows buyers to adjust the rear bench forward or backward depending on whether they need more passenger space or more cargo room. This flexibility is highly valued in Africa, where many buyers use their vehicle for both personal and small commercial purposes throughout the week.
For CIS buyers who frequently travel with family or carry luggage on long highway trips, the extra rear space also improves comfort on long journeys.
For African Markets: The extra rear space and sliding seats make the Tacqua more versatile for family use and commercial passenger transport. Many of our clients in Nigeria and Kenya specifically request the Tacqua over the standard T-Cross because of this practicality.
For CIS Markets: The additional rear legroom is appreciated during long winter drives and family trips. The higher ground clearance (≈179mm) also helps when driving on snow-covered or poorly maintained roads outside major cities.
Both models are based on the same MQB A0 platform, so driving dynamics are quite similar. However, the Tacqua’s extra length and weight can make it feel slightly more stable at highway speeds. The 1.4T 330TSI version (150 hp) offers strong performance in both models, while the 1.2T and 1.5L variants provide good balance between power and fuel efficiency.
Real-world fuel consumption is very close between the two models. Most of our export clients report average consumption between 6.0–7.5 L/100km depending on driving conditions and load.
In most cases, the Tacqua offers better value for export buyers because of the significantly more interior space at a similar or only slightly higher price point compared to a similarly equipped global T-Cross. When you factor in the extra practicality and comfort, the Tacqua usually wins for buyers who need a versatile compact SUV.
At Panda Used Cars, we can source both models. However, based on feedback from our clients in Africa and CIS countries, the Tacqua has become the more popular choice for its space advantage.
